School readiness refers to a child’s ability to make an easy and successful transition into school. Whilst there are many variables that determine school readiness, such as self help skills, social skills, emotional regulation and concentration, there are also other ways that you can help to prepare your child, by giving them an advantage to cope with the academic tasks that they will be expected to engage in, in kindergarten and beyond.
Lil’ Academics strives to give students the tools needed to experience success in kindergarten by offering them support through programs such as:
· Pre-Writing skills
· Letter identification and Phonological awareness
· Expressive and receptive communication
· Early numeracy development
· Attention and concentration
Children who are better prepared for the demands of school life will experience less anxiety about the prospect of commencing their schooling and will experience greater success in the classroom.
Struggling students who are not being supported in the classroom, continue to become lost, feel unmotivated, experience low self worth and begin to act out in order to avoid difficult learning tasks. Students who are not being extended in the classroom and who are regularly experiencing success when measured against their peers, eventually become disengaged and unmotivated. Advanced learners are rarely given the opportunity to realise that their own informed effort is the catalyst to their own success and that failure as well as reflective persistence can inform their own effort. Lil’ academics endeavours to address the learning needs of both struggling and advanced learners by assessing their current academic levels and devising individualised learning programs to both support them in achieving at their current grade level and also moving them forward by teaching up.
Student academic literacy ability is assessed to determine their current strengths in reading and writing, and to gather a clear picture of their individual needs. Students are assessed using a combination of assessment tools.Student’s academic needs are measured using both the results from these assessments as well as against the NSW progressions. Individualised programs are then created to support student growth in line with the NSW curriculum.
Student numeracy ability is assessed to determine student strengths as well as areas of vulnerability. Maths should be an enjoyable experience for children and children are more likely to learn when engaging in hands-on interactive games and activities.
Maths tutoring is delivered through small group lessons where children have the opportunity to revise and practise learned skills, apply new learning to prior knowledge and to discuss their understanding and mathematical strategies with their peers.
